Chilling Execution Tapes

Tuesday, July 17th, 2007

I am sitting here with chills going up and down my spine listening to Democracy Now. On today’s broadcast they play never before heard recordings of executions. They are extremely chilling and extremely frightening, extremely difficult to listen to. Just the simple fact that they are carrying out a murder an execution, something that people would go to jail for and possibly even sentenced to death for, they are doing it legally.

Ending a life has never before sounded so chilling and sterile. It’s more gruesome than seeing or hearing a very bloody movie. The precision, the required witnesses and of course the one who’s life is ending strapped to a chair staring out at onlookers who are simply staring back.

5 minutes pass and the condemmed (as they call the man) is murdered. “Very smooth operation, get us another one.” Last words of the first tape. They also talk about a problem with the execution, something popping, the primary eyewitness making the recording believed it to be a bolt of lightning (this was an electric chair execution).

These tapes are extremely chilling and very upsetting to me. It’s disgusting to think that our government can play God and choose to end a person’s life and by such barbaric methods at that. However, no matter how you murder a person at the end of the day it’s still murder.

Earlier this evening I was watching Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. “A dead man can’t learn from his mistakes”, a quote from Captain Sisko. I’ve been saying that exact same phrase my entire life and to this day and into the future I will continue to say it.

I am extremely thankful that Troy Anthony Davis was given another 90 days to live. I hope and pray that they will commute his execution. If our President of the United States can commute the prison sentence of Lewis Libby because the President thinks that 30 months in prison is too harsh, then Troy Anthony Davis and every single person on death row should have their execution sentences commuted. Murder, and that is what I am going to continue to call it, no more strikethroughs to be politically correct. Murder is very permanent.

There was another tape played on today’s broadcast of Democracy Now. I don’t know that I can recommend anyone to listen to these because they are extremely chilling, but, you should listen to them if nothing more than to help set a fire. Things need to change. Abolish the death penalty, now!

Sheehan to run for Pelosi’s seat

Monday, July 9th, 2007

This morning I came across an article with the title “Cindy Sheehan to run for Pelosi’s House Seat.” Obviously catching my attention I click over to the story and read through. Sheehan plans to run for Pelosi’s position only if Pelosi doesn’t introduce articles of impeachment in the next two weeks.

In a quote from the article: “Democrats and Americans feel betrayed by the Democratic leadership,” Sheehan told the Associated Press. “We hired them to bring an end to the war. I’m not too far from San Francisco, so it wouldn’t be too big of a move for me. I would give her a run for her money.”

You’ll recall that in late May Cindy Sheehan announced that she was leaving the anti war movement. Many people, including myself, were upset to see her go but completely understood the reasons Cindy gave for leaving the movement. In the WCBSTV article there is a quote from Cindy on why she is returning so quickly: “I didn’t expect to be back so soon, but the focus is different than it was before.” Sheehan said Sunday. “Instead of talking and making accusations, we’re going into communities and talking to the people who’ve been hurt by the Bush regime. We’re finding out how we can help people.

The reasons that Cindy Sheehan believes Bush should be impeached are: 1.) She believes that Bush misled the public about the reasons for going to war, 2.) Violoated the Geneva Convention by torturing detainees 3.) Crossed the line by commuting the prison sentence of former vice presidential aide I. Lewis “Scooter” Libby. Other reasons Sheehan gave for impeachment are for the domestic spying program and the “inadequate and tragic” response to Hurricane Katrina.

When I voted last November I sat up and watched the numbers come in, anxiously awaiting a verdict of whether or not we had replaced the Kool Aid drinking republicans. Come to find out that we did and I was extremely excited by this. However we now know that it doesn’t matter whether they were Republicans or Democrats they are both drinking from the same cup now.

One of the problems with impeachment that I see is that if we don’t have dual impeachments for Bush it would probably be just the same under Dick Cheney, maybe worse, granted we could have impeachment hearings for him just as soon as we got Bush out of there but it would take time to do that.

Reasons Not To Impeach

Before I started writing this entry I wanted to find a couple of reasons the other side gives for not allowing impeachment to take place, I found a couple of good reasons that do actually make sense:

  • Calling for the Impeachment of Bush/Cheney lets Congress off the hook. Congress became complicit when it abdicated its authority under the U.S. Constitution and caved in to the war-lust of the Executive Branch. Every member of Congress should be held responsible for his/her vote and tried along with those in the Executive Branch. In fact, the responsible members of Congress should be put on trial first. Without their votes, there would have been no war.
  • There is no logical reason for optimism. All of the anti-war protests in the world cannot stop this war machine. War has become so profitable for the corporations that wars will continue. The corporations that manufacture weapon systems rely on the Principle of Perpetual War.
  • Final Thoughts

My final thoughts of this are that even if we do impeach President Bush we will have Cheney who will have to be dealt with and then of course the rest of the chain of succession. President Bush will be in office until 01/20/09. Even if articles of impeachment are introduced the proceedings will take a long time and by the time they have finished (if they even finish) the election campaign will be up and running full force and the before we know it a new President will have been elected (or one will steal the election, whichever comes first).

Please don’t get me wrong. I do not like President Bush. I think he is one of the absolute worst President’s this country has ever seen but I think we’re stuck with him until the bitter end. I do think we need to hold President Bush and many others accountable but I do not think impeachment is going to happen and even if the articles are introduced and proceedings are held it would be a long time before Bush would be removed from office.

Also I would like to commend Cindy Sheehan for her efforts. I think more people need to take stands like she does. I think more people should try to get into political offices instead of sitting around and complaining about the issues.

Last thought. I really truly hope something can be done about George Bush and his cronies. They have obstructed justice, tortured human beings, done nothing to help people when they could have done something and destroyed the reputation of every single American in this country.
